Men Can Now Check for ED While Sleeping
Malaysian
men can now allay their fear and uncertainty that they suffer from
erectile dysfunction or “ED” in the privacy of their bedroom with a
safe and easy-to-use ED test band introduced by Eli Lilly Malaysia
today. The ED test band is designed to be a first-line home screening
test to help men ascertain if they suffer from ED, before confirming
the diagnosis and seeking treatment from their doctor.
Whilst up to 47 percent of Malaysian men above 40 suffer from ED,
studies have revealed that only ten percent speak to their doctors
about ED, of which a mere four percent actually receive treatment .
“Despite various efforts to help more Malaysian men understand ED and
its significance, embarrassment is still very much a key barrier to
men’s willingness to seek treatment for ED. This means that the
underlying conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension and
diabetes which are commonly associated with ED can go undetected and
untreated,” said Dr Christine Zhou, General Manager of Eli Lily
Malaysia.
“The ED test band is a simple, non-invasive screening test which men
can use in the privacy of their own homes before consulting to their
doctors about ED. It is initiated and introduced as part of our efforts
to help Malaysian men identify their condition as well as encourage
them to seek medical treatment in order to enjoy a better quality of
life,” Dr Zhou added.
The concept of the ED test band has been around since 1970’s, and can
help men determine if they have ED, and whether the cause of the ED is
physical or psychological.
Explaining the concept of the ED test band, Consultant Urologist and
Secretary of the Malaysian Society of Andrology and Study of the Aging
Male, Dr Peter Ng said, “It is normal for a healthy man to have five to
six erections during sleep, especially during the rapid eye movement
(REM) stage. As such, the ED test band is to be wrapped snugly around
the shaft of a man’s penis before sleep. If he has an erection during
the night, the band will be torn. However, if the band is still in
place in the morning, he may have ED.”
