MECM and PIKOM Sign MOU To Bring PC Gemilang: “PC Mampu Beli” To
Malaysians
The
Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia, Malaysia (MECM) and
the
Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry, Malaysia (PIKOM)
signed a
Memorandum of Understanding on 2 March 2004 to signify the
collaboration
between both parties to bring PC Gemilang: “PC Mampu Beli” to
Malaysians.
Signing
on behalf of the Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia was
Datuk Dr
Halim Shafie, Secretary General of MECM while PIKOM was represented by
Mr
Xavier Tan, Chairman of PIKOM. The signing ceremony was witnessed by
Datuk Amar
Leo Moggie, Minister of Energy, Communications and Multimedia.
The
unveiling of PC Gemilang is in line with the Government’s vision to
increase PC
and Internet penetration as well as digital literacy amongst the
Malaysian
society in order to bridge the digital divide and realize the nation’s
goal of
building an ICT enabled knowledge society.
According
to Datuk Amar Leo Moggie, among the primary objectives of the project
are to
increase the number of PC and Internet users in the country,
particularly among
people in the rural areas and those in the lower income groups.
Currently,
out of a total of 2.1 million households in the rural areas, only
approximately
200 000 or 9.6 per cent of households owned PCs, said the Minister.
PC Gemilang
is the nation’s first Malaysian-made
PC targeted at the value PC market segment.
It is truly an offering for the masses as it is
tagged at a very
attractive price point of below RM1,000 per PC.
